Mission San Luis offers a wide range of educational programming for adults and children. Our workshops provide the opportunity to learn about 17th-century Spanish and Native American crafts and lifestyles while expressing your creativity. Participants will gain the skills needed to craft materials similar to those used by the 17th-century residents of Mission San Luis.

Blacksmithing

Beginner Blacksmithing

Members: $60 / Non-members: $75 
10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Most First Saturdays:

  • Saturday, May 4, 2024  (Registration deadline April 27)

Ages: 13 and up (Youth under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
Class size: 2 participants

Join us at the Mission San Luis forge for an introduction to blacksmithing. Start the day learning to build and maintain a fire in a traditional Spanish-style forge. Using basic techniques of fire and hammer, create your own masterpiece and leave inspired.

Participants must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Clothing must be made of natural fibers. Contact lenses should not be worn.

Intermediate Blacksmithing

Members: $60 / Non-members: $75  
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Ages: 13 and up  (Youth under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian)
Class size: 2 participants

Continue to hone your blacksmithing skills at the MSL forge. This workshop adapts to the student’s needs, and can be taken more than once to build skills.

Participants must bring a lunch, wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Clothing must be made of natural fibers. Contact lenses should not be worn.

 

Pine Needle Basket Making

Members: $24 / Non-members: $30
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Class size: Minimum 2 / Maximum 6 participants

Pine needle basketry is one of the oldest-known coiled basketry techniques, and one which many cultures have practiced. In this workshop participants will learn the basic techniques of making coils from pine needles and stitching them together with natural fibers to make a simple basket. Enjoy the scent of a pine forest and the meditative act of coiling with us!

 

Candle Making

Class size: Minimum 2 / Maximum 8 participants

In this workshop participants will learn how to form a taper candle by repeatedly dipping the wick string into melted wax. Bring a friend to this NEW workshop offering!

 

 


If less than the minimum number of participants register for a workshop, the class will be cancelled and participants will be refunded or rescheduled for a different day. Invite your friends to help fill up the class.

Space is very limited. Pre-registration is required.
